Problematizing Imagine IT I read Stuck in the Shallow End by Jane Margolis. One of the problems encountered by LASD district teachers who were part of the initiative to increase computer science AP course offering was that of policy. One school had to stop offering computer science because the school was placed on probation due to poor academic performance on mathematics and reading. Computer science was dropped due to policy that evaluates schools based on students performance on standardized test. Schools with high population of minorities are often affected by this policy because students at these school perform below state benchmarks. The goal of my school is to increase performance on the PSAT and SAT. The Administrators determined that one way of achieving this goal, is by mandating that all teachers integrate literacy skills into the content they teach. I am not really affected by this mandate because the big idea of my project requires that student demonstrate understanding of concept through “re-seeing”, Students will use analogies and metaphors in expressing understanding. I am able to integrate this pedagogy strategy without disruption or adjusting the curriculum.
